Media institutions should be committed to fulfil their obligations to build a knowledgeable society for the betterment of the human society, emphasized President Maithripala Sirisena.

According to the President, the media have the responsibility to criticize and point out the shortcomings and mistakes and provide accurate information to the public for the betterment of the country.

He made these remarks participating in a ceremony, organized to submit a set of proposals to establish a righteous media culture in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies, held at the National Library auditorium in Colombo yesterday (3rd April).

The President further said that the present Government highly values the principles of media freedom and said that in the near future the Right to Information Bill also will be passed in the Parliament.

“Some of the private media institutions work for their own agenda. But it is their responsibility to use the given media freedom for the betterment of the country in a professional manner,” President Sirisena said.
