    Empowerment of public a key need of the hour - President

    Power vested with the politicians should be utilized to empower the public, who granted it to the politicians, without accumulating more power for the personal benefits, emphasized President Maithripala Sirisena.

     

    According to the President, the character of late politician Lalith Athulathmudali is an example for the society as a leader who never misappropriated the power vested in him. President made these remarks delivering the keynote address at the commemoration ceremony of the late Lalith Athulathmudali, held at the BMICH on Monday (9th May).

     

    President described Lalith Athulathmudali as a character, who always lives in the hearts of the people and said, “he has never involved with the fraud, corruption and abuse of state resources.”

     

    The way he behaved in the Parliament and the statements he made as a real humanist are also exemplary to modern politicians, he added.

     

    The President also recalled that the every Government that came into the power took steps to strengthen the Mahapola programme, which was implemented by late Athulathmudali.

     

    Maha Sangha and other religious leaders, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Minister of Finance and President of the Lalith Athulathmudali Foundation, Ravi Karunanayake, and the family members of the late Lalith Athulathmudali were also present.
