    Immediate program essential to change public attitudes on Police - President

    President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized the necessity of paying attention immediately to improve the mutual relationship between police and the public and thereby change the public attitudes on the police service.


    He made these remarks at a meeting held on Friday (13th Jan.) President's office with the high-ranking official of the Sri Lanka Police Department including Inspector General of Police.


    At the meeting the President also paid attention regarding the discipline of the low ranks of the police in public relations.


    The program being carried out by the police for drug controlling and rehabilitation of addicts were discussed and attention was also paid to inform the countries about drugs smuggling.


    The police pointed out that the number of planned crimes are based on mobile phones and the police has to face difficulties when obtaining information in this regard from the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC). The President said that he would look in to this issue and discuss with TRC and Sri Lanka Telecom if necessary.


    Further the President pointed out the importance for the police department to proceed with new plans and programs in the cases where criticisms are coming from public and the media.
