This summit is held in Sri Lanka according to an invitation extended by President Sirisena. Three hundred Chief Sangha Nayakas from 47 member countries, Buddhist monks, scholars and devotees are attending in this summit.
The summit which is held under the theme ‘Buddhism for World Peace’ will be held in the Temple Trees today and tomorrow while the concluding ceremony with a cultural show will be held on November 04 at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre.
The summit, conducted by the World Buddhist Supreme Conference of Japan will focus on building world peace, norms and values. A publication on further spread Buddhism in the world will be issued at this occasion.
Speaking at the occasion, the President said the guidance of religious philosophies is very important in building a peaceful world by minimizing issues and conflicts.
He expressed his pleasure about the opportunity to host this summit in Sri Lanka where there is a long history nurtured by Buddhism. He said the message given to the world through this summit is timely and significant.
The welcome address was delivered by the President of Buddhist Summit Ven. Kamba Lama Gabju Thero.
A special stamp was also issued to mark this occasion.
Maha Sangha of the Tri-Nikayas, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Minister of Buddha Sasana Gamini Jayawickrama Perera also participated on this occasion.
