    President not allows to sign any agreement which is detrimental to the country Featured

    I will not allow to sign any foreign agreement which is a challenge to the country’s independence and sovereignty or not suitable to the country with any world power during my tenure, President MaithripalaSirisena stressed.Although there are discussions in the society about agreements such as SOFA and Millennium Challenge and a land act which is not suitable to the country, I will leave no room to sign such detrimental agreements, President Sirisena further said.

    President made these comments during the concluding programme of “Let’s Stand Together for the Country”Monaragala District Programme held at Bibila Public Ground yesterday (6).Speaking at the gathering President said when he is taking the lead to eradicate the drug menace which has become a national disaster from this country, politicians as well as the officials have come forward to protect the drug dealers. Innocent children of this country will have to bear the consequences of their unscrupulous acts in few years said the President adding that those who file petitions against the death penalty irrespective of their positions or forms are the dupes of these drug kingpins.

    One cannot ignore the damage caused by the illegal drug trafficking and it has developed to a national disaster becausenone of the politicians who assumed power in the past did not take actions against the drug dealers for their petty political gains. A considerable drawback can be seen in the drug trafficking due to the stern actions taken against it, President further said.

    The fifth phase of the“Let’s Stand Together for the Country” programme launched island-wide by the Presidential Secretariat under the directions of President Sirisena to identify unresolved issues in rural areas and to find effective solutions to them was commenced on July 6th centered around Monaragala. The programme was conducted covering 319 GramaNiladhari Divisions in 11 Divisional Secretariats in Monagarala district bringing benefits to more than 497,000 people. During today’s concluding ceremony President handed over many benefits more.

    In order to increase the quality of treatments and clinical services provided to those who are affected by the kidney disease, the Kidney Unit established at a cost of Rs. 36 million at Wellawaya Base Hospital was also vested with the people by President Sirisena via remote communication technology.

    The communiqué on environmental responsibility was handed over to the President by the Chairman of the Central Environment Authority IsuraDevapriya. Ministers GayanthaKarunathilleke, RanjithMaddumaBandara and DayaGamage, Governor of the Uva Province Marshall Perera, RaveendraSamarasinghe, MahindaAmaraweera, JagathPushpa Kumara, ChamaraSampathDassanayake and many other representatives, Secretary to the President, government officials including the District Secretary in Monaragala, senior security officials and the villagers were also among the large gathering.
