    20A to the Constitution is a responsibility to be fulfilled in this era – President Featured

    The 20th Amendment to the Constitution which is presented introducing a new electoral system to accurate the current system is a responsibility to be fulfilled in this era, says President Maithripala Sirisena.

     

    Any action to destroy it, reverse it and prevent will be considered as an act against the people, he added.

     

    The President was addressing the rally ‘Abolish Preferential System – Make 20A a Reality’ organized by Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to educate people about the need of passing the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, held at Viharamahadevi Park on Monday (June 8).

     

    The President also said passing of the 20th Amendment is a great service to the people. “Politicians should present their opinion on this to the people in public within next few days” he said.

     

    “If this current electoral system continue for further few years, the field of politics will deliver Parliament only businessmen who spend money and win elections instead of educated persons with knowledge of politics who has true aspiration to work for people”, the President further stated.

     

    As a result of people with money entering the Parliament, the House was cast with a dark shadow of the preferential electoral system, he said.

     

    President Sirisena also recalled what people endorsed at the Presidential election on January 8 was the programme included abolishing Executive Presidency and establishing a new electoral system.

     

    He added that the fight against the Executive Presidency which was lasted for 37years ended with a substantial victory by passing the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in the Parliament.

     

    In order to fulfill the aspirations of the people it is essential to pass not only the 19th Amendment, but also the 20th Amendment should be passed to change the electoral system.
