President calls on parents and students not to abuse modern-day rights and privileges Featured

    August 04, 2015

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday called on the parents and students not to abuse Rights and Privileges given in the modern-day society to promote indiscipline. "No one will be allowed to hide behind laws, rights or privileges to promote indiscipline or promote misbehavior," President Sirisena said Monday.

President made these remarks while participating at the annual prize giving ceremony of Asoka Vidyalaya held at the BMICH yesterday (Aug. 03).

Recalling a recent incident in a school where a student brought a mobile phone which had indecent contents to the classroom, the President stressed that Laws, Rights and Privileges should not be a cover for promoting indiscipline and inappropriate behavior in the country.

President Sirisena said he will stand up for the teacher who had to face difficulties by trying to redress the students for their own future's sake. A special inquiry will be held into the alleged incident, he added.

Reminding the stern punishment the students received from teachers in his days, President urged both parents and students not to use Rights and Privileges in the modern-day society in a wrong way.

President Sirisena, who arrived at the BMICH, was ceremonially received by the Principal Y. Yasarathna and the staff of the School. The scouts of the Asoka Vidyalaya accorded a Guard of Honour to the President.

The President also presented awards and prizes to students with performance. Two teachers of the school were felicitated at this event for reporting to work without taking any leave.
