    Sri Lanka in second place in medal tally at South Asian games

    Sri Lanka, with a total medal Tally of 64 is in second place after India at the 12th South Asian Games that is simultaneously underway in Guwahati and Shillong in India.

    Sri Lanka has bagged 11 gold medals, 30 Silver medals and 23 bronze medals. India tops the list with 58 gold, 20 silver and 6 bronze medals.

     

    Sri Lanka's Matthew Abeysinghe continuing his dominance in Swimming bagged gold in the Men's 200m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly, 400m Individual Medley, 50m free, and 400m free relay.

     

    In women's swimming Kimiko Raheem and Machiko Raheem bagged gold and silver respectively in 50m free. Kimiko also won gold in 100m back, and 200m back.

     

    Meanwhile Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said a special program will be launched to develop the sport of swimming in Sri Lanka.

     

    He said Sri Lankan sportsmen and women have been able to report significant victories from the swimming event at the South Asian games mainly due to the dedication and commitment by both the trainers and the swimmers. A special training pool for swimming will be set up and the sportsmen and women will be extensively trained targeting the Asian Games 2018, the Minister added
