The closing ceremony was held yesterday (22nd Aug.) at the Panagoda gymnasium under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
At the 9th phase of the DSGs, which commenced in 2003, Sri Lanka Army emerged champion of 15 games and events (15 men’s and 7 women’s) out of total of 35 in the entire tournament. Army earlier had grabbed the overall championship four times in 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008.
Sri Lanka Army clinched 120 Gold medals, Sri Lanka Navy 95 Gold medals, and Sri Lanka Air Force 84 Gold medals.
This year’s DSG was launched by the Sri Lanka Air Force with the support of other sister services.
The next edition of the Defense Games will be hosted by the Sri Lanka Army in 2017 and it was symbolized through the handing over of the DSG Flag to the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva by the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala.
State Minister of Defense Ruwan Wijayawardane, Defense Secretary Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Chief of Defense Staff Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilake, Commanders of the three forces participated.
