Ceylon Tea takes pride of place at the Cairo International Fair

    April 01, 2015

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Cairo in association with the Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) organized a country stall for Ceylon tea at the recent Cairo International Fair.  The Sri Lanka Tea Stall has been featured at the Fair for the third connective year. Tea, being the main national beverage, over 95 million Egyptians annually consume close to 100,000 metric tons of tea.

Egypt offers a good market opportunity for Ceylon tea, and merits greater attention of Sri Lankan tea exporters.  At the request of the Embassy, five leading tea exporting companies (Amazon Trading Pvt. Ltd., Stassen Exports Limited, Tea Tang Pvt. Ltd, Ranfer Teas Pvt. Ltd., and Basilur Tea Pvt. Ltd.) made available a diverse range of their tea samples at the Sri Lanka Stall.  With the assistance of the Embassy and the Sri Lanka Tea Board, a Sri Lankan tea company, Senok had its own stall at the Fair.  The tea samples at the stall received significant exposure, attracting many visitors. They were delighted to enjoy Ceylon Tea being served at the stall.

Tourist promotional material from the Sri Lanka Tourist Promotional Bureau was given away to visitors, promoting Sri Lanka as a destination with many touristic opportunities and options.  Effective one-to-one-business meetings were conducted with potential buyers.  On the opening day of the exhibition, the stall was visited by the Egyptian Prime Minister His Excellency Ibrahim Mahlab and the Minister of Trade Monir Fakhry Abd El Nour.

Ambassador Sudantha Ganegama Arachchi declared open the Sri Lanka stall on 18th March, in the presence of invited guests.  Mr. Hasitha de Alwis, Director (Promotion) – Middle East/Gulf/North Africa, Ceylon Tea Promotion Unit, Dubai travelled to Cairo and made his contribution to the success of this promotional activity.  The Sri Lanka Embassy has planned to continue its efforts through a series of initiatives in coordination with the Sri Lanka Tea Board for promoting value-added Ceylon tea in Egypt and the North African region.
