Chess Competition in Argentina for the Cuban Five

    October 27, 2014

Chess fans spontaneously joined in this capital by the chess competition for the Cuban Five, demanding the release of three Cuban anti-terrorist fighters still imprisoned in the United States.

Organized by the Argentine Committee for Freedom of the Cuban Five and the Group Peon Vuelve, Chess players Organized and Unit, the activity took place at the central square of the Obelisk, the busiest area in the heart of Buenos Aires. "We pursue two objectives; one of them is to make Argentina more visible in the fight for the liberation of the three companions who are still imprisoned unjustly and arbitrarily," told Prensa Latina Lidia Donnini, reported Prensa Latina news agency quoting one of the coordinators of the Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five.

The other one is "invited to accompany the Committee members to deliver on Tuesday 28 a letter to the US Embassy to President Barack Obama in which we demand the end of the blockade on Cuba and the release of Gerardo, Ramon and Antonio".

The organizers of the event did not receive permission for the activity of the right-wing government of the City of Buenos Aires Mauricio Macri ; however, they decided to do it anyway and it was a pleasant day, of music, sport and solidarity.

The activity were supported by members of the Movement of Friendship and Solidarity with Cuba (MasCuba) and the Communist Youth Federation (FJC). (KH)
