WHO Official Highlights Cuba's Role against Ebola

    November 02, 2014

Paris,  The director of epidemiology of the World Health Organization (WHO), Sylvie Briand, highlighted the importance of working together to fight Ebola, and lauded the role of Cuban doctors in the countries affected by that virus.

The solidarity of the Cuban doctors is wonderful. They were the first to respond to the international call and I think that everybody must acknowledge their courage, reported Prensa Latina news agency quoting  the official to have said during a conference at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Cuba has sent 250 medical professionals to Sierra Leona, Liberia and Guinea Conakry.

Briand explained that since the virus was first detected in 1976, 23 outbreaks have been reported in several countries, basically in Africa.

However, the first outbreaks took place in forests, because the Ebola is carried by animals, but the difference now is that it has spread to populated areas that are connected to other cities worldwide.

In any case, we are talking about a wide-range epidemic and we have to mobilize all forces to win the battle, said the doctor.

Several speakers insisted on the importance of joint efforts under the guidance of the World Health Organization to fight the outbreak of hemorrhagic fever affecting Western Africa.(KH)
