More than 2.7 Million Syrian Children Vaccinated against Polio

    November 05, 2014

Despite the intensity of the war, more than 2,722,000 children were vaccinated against poliomyelitis as part of the recently completed campaign in Syria, said official sources on Tuesday (04).

In a communique, Minister of Health Nizar Yazigi indicated that 94 percent of Syrian territory has been covered by the campaign, which was considered a progress by him.

Yazigi highlighted the significance of the recent campaign carried out from October 1 to 23, seeking to eradicate poliomyelitis, which reappeared after the beginning of the war in 2011.

Yazigi said that Rural Damascus led the figures with 326,848 children vaccinated, followed by Hama province with 325,000 and Damascus with 277,000.

Recently, Yazigi denounced that armed groups did not allow the distribution of vaccines for children throughout the territories controlled by them and destroyed medicine packages.(KH)
