    Tsunami dead commemorated in Peraliya yesterday

    The fifteenth year commemoration of the 2004 tsunami tragedy together with the National Safety Day was observed at the Tsunami Memorial at Telwatta, Hikkadawa yesterday.

    Southern Province Governor Dr. Willie Gamage, Human Rights and Legal Reforms State Minister Mohan P. De Silva and former Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal De Silva and religious dignitaries of all faiths participated. The event commenced following the arrival of the refurbished commuter train that was hit and destroyed by the 2004 tsunami at Telwatte in Peraliya in Hikkaduwa.

    The train No 50 arrived in Telwatte at the same time on which the tragedy occurred with the driver and the two guards of same train who survived the tsunami. A large number of relatives of tsunami victims also arrived on board the train from Colombo.

    Public officials led by Galle District Secretary, Somarathna Vidanapathirana and police officers led Galle DIG Nuwan Wedasinghe, Galle District Disaster Management Center Assistant Director Major Induka Wickramasingha and tri-forces officials also participated in the commemoration.

    Floral tributes were placed in memory of tsunami victims at Peraliya tsunami memorial by Southern Province Governor Dr. Willie Gamage and Human Rights and Legal Reforms State Minister Mohan P. De Silva followed by other special invitees and by the relatives of tsunami victims.
