According to the Ministry, the new Airport is planned to be built in the Sewood Estate at Kotalagala in Haputale. It is intended to put up a runway which is 1.2 kilometres long and 75 metres wide. The work is expected to cost Rs.700 million.
The Civil Aviation Services Ministry, the Civil Aviation Service Authority, the Urban Development Authority and the Road Development Authority will handle the construction activities.
The Airport is being built targeting tourists who will be visiting locations such as Ella, Bandarawala, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Diyatalawa. It will facilitate tourists who intended to view the Thangamale Birds National Park, and Dunhinda and Ravana Waterfalls and also the Worlds End.
The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva inspected the site proposed for the building of the Airport recently and the Minister pointed out that the new Airport will promote economic growth in the area with the development of infrastructure.
