According to the Ministry, under the first component of the programme, 31,095 families will be provided with clean drinking water in Welikanda, Hingurakgoda, Thamankaduwa and Mihinthale Divisional Secretariats. Work has already got under way to construct five water plants to achieve this at a cost of Rs. 285.15 million. The Asian Development Bank will finance the projects.
The water plants to be constructed under the programme are envisioned to supply pipe-borne water to more than 600.000 families in the affected Divisional Secretariats of the provinces concerned.
The Ministry has received instructions from President Maithripala Sirisena to implement all drinking water supply projects which have been prepared by them to serve the public in areas affected by the chronic kidney disease as essential projects.
According to reports, more than 325 kidney patients have been found in these divisions.
