    Local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing arrested

    Sri Lanka Navy on Tuesday (22nd March) arrested local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing in three locations in Mannar, Lankapatuna and Trincomalee.

     

    Three persons along with a Fibre Glass Dinghy (FGD) and four Gelignite Sticks (approximate weight 100g each) were arrested in Mannar.  Meanwhile another local fisherman along with an FGD and 16 kilograms of illegally caught fish using explosive was arrested in the seas off Lankapatuna.

     

    On the same day, seventeen local fishermen with two FGDs engaged in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing gears in the seas off Chapel Island in Trincomalee were also arrested. A pair of diving fins, a diving mask, 2 snorkels, 3 cast-nets and 2 purse-seine nets were also taken into custody during this arrest.

     

    The arrested persons along with the items were handed over to the Mannar, Serunuwara, and  Trincomalee Harbour Police respectively for further investigation.
