    June 18, 2016

Moves are underway to make Maharagama Cancer Hospital the best cancer hospital in South Asia before 2020, Kadijah Foundation President Dr. M.S.H. Mohamed said.

"All should set aside differences and get together to make Sri Lanka a prosperous country which cannot be shaken by any power in the world," he said.

Dr. Mohamed was addressing a ceremony in Colombo recently to mark the completion of collecting Rs. 200 million to buy a pet scanner for Maharagama Cancer Hospital.

Work will continue to develop Maharagama Cancer Hospital and all required machines will be provided in the future, he said.

Maharagama Cancer Hospital Director Dr. M.Y.K.Wilfred said the hospital account received Rs. 233 million instead of Rs. 200 million and was still receiving funds from donors.

He said among the donors were children.

"Cancer patients in Sri Lanka are on the rise. The government spend over Rs. 8,000 million annually for cancer treatment," Dr. Wilfred said. He said the relevant procedure will be followed and arrangements will be made as soon as possible to buy the Pet Scanner after calling tenders. Ven. Dambara Amila Thera said Mohamed set a fine example to Sri Lankans on reconciliation.

He said cancer is the number two killer in Sri Lanka and it will become the number one killer in Sri Lanka by 2020.
