The residential population within the Anuradhapura Municipal Council Area is about 51,000 and with the increase in pilgrim arrivals to Anuradhapura due to the peaceful environment in the country, the day time population is around 100,000.

The Ministry of Defence and Urban Development has taken steps to maintain a planned development in the town area based on a development plan prepared by the UDA and to vest the state land in extent of 228.9 perches situated at 1st Lane, Maithripala Senanayake Mawatha, Anuradhapura, with the UDA, for redevelopment activities.
