    Japan provides Rs.240Mn grant to meet development needs

    The Government of Japan has granted 200 million Japanese Yen (approximately Rs. 240 million) to the Government of Sri Lanka for procuring a variety of essential SME products manufactured in Japan, aimed at meeting the development needs in various social and economic sectors of Sri Lanka.

    The Finance and Planning Ministry said based on long term economic cooperation between the two countries the Government of Japan has agreed to provide grant assistance of Rs. 240 million under Non Project Grant Aid.

     

    The range of products provided under the "Non-Project Grant Aid for Provision of Japanese SME's Products (2014)" scheme was selected by the Government of Sri Lanka in consultation with the line agencies concerned.

     

    The government said it has decided to utilize the grant for the provision of advanced medical equipment to improve the health care facilities to uplift the health standards of Sri Lankan citizens and provide equipment for the development of ground water resources in drought affected areas in Sri Lanka.

     

    In March 2012 too, Japan provided Rs. 200 million under the same grant scheme to procure machinery and apparatus and electrical and electronic equipment for use by the health sector of Sri Lanka.

     

    Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Nobuhito Hobo and Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning Dr. P.B. Jayasundera signed the Exchange of Notes at the Ministry recently.
