    Consumer Price Index for August shows a deflation

    The Department of Census and Statistics has released the Colombo Consumer Price index (CCPl) for the month of August 2015 today (31) as 181.9. This shows a decrease of 0.9 index point and also a percentage of 0.52 compared to the last month's index point of 182.8. This change has occurred due to the price decrease of food items by 0.71 percent and price increase of non-food items by 0.19 percent in the economy.

    Sri Lanka has reported deflation of 0.2 percent   in August 2015 as same as in July 201 5 for the second consecutive month after March 1995. The main contributor for this decline was the major decrease in non food prices. This was mainly due to the decrease of electricity and water bills, L.P.gas, kerosene, petrol and diesel.

     

    The moving average inflation rate for the month of August 2015 has declined to 1.0 percent from 1.3 percent of the previous month.
