Began as 'Ceylon Army' in 1949 and later changed as the Sri Lanka Army in 1972, it has sacrificed about 25,000 valuable lives of its soldiers towards protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland and ushering in an era of peace. In addition 125 civil staff members have also lost their lives while 3425 men have been reported as missing in action. More than 82,337 Army personnel and 38 civil staff members have sustained injuries and become disabled during the conflict.
At present there are 24 Regiments and 34 Regimental training schools in the army moulding officers and other ranks to serve the interests of the nation. Since the end of the conflict the army is involved extensively in the development of the country particularly in the reconciliation and development drive of the North and East. Its men are largely mobilized during times of natural catastrophes for search, rescue and relief operations. They are also being offered more opportunities in international peace keeping missions abroad.
