    Two arrested, 40 others identified for spreading rumours on social media

    The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had arrested two persons for spreading false information regarding the Coronavirus (Covid-19) on social media, said DIG Ajith Rohana addressing a media briefing on the Coronavirus issue at the Government Information Department a short while ago. He said 40 suspects who had engaged in spreading misinformation related to the coronavirus have also been identified.

    He said the two suspects, are residents of Ragama and Bandaragama areas.They would be produced before court shortly.

    DIG Ajith Rohana, said one of the suspects, Niminda Priyadharshana, was arrested in Bandaragama this morning and that he had repeatedly posted false information on Face book claiming there were several deaths in Sri Lanka as a result of the Coronavirus.

    He said that the other suspect, Dushmantha Amila, had also spread similar false information on social media and that he was arrested in Ragama this afternoon.DIG Ajith Rohana said that investigations are ongoing regarding the nearly 40 other suspects for similar charges, adding that more arrests are imminent.
