    The renovated Grand Oriental Hotel (GOH) reopens under the patronage of the Prime Minister

    The Grand Oriental Hotel situated at York Street, Colombo Fort, which has been renovated for the fourth time and has a history of 183 years, was reopened by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday night (18).

     

    On the instructions of the Prime Minister as the Minister of Urban Development and Housing, Selendiva Investment Company which operates under the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and the State Engineering Corporation of Sri Lanka have jointly undertaken the renovation work of the Grand Oriental Hotel at a cost of 225 million rupees.

    In addition to GOH, several other buildings in Colombo are being renovated to preserve their antiquity. Upon completion of the renovations, all these buildings with significant archeological value will be introduced as a separate area named “Colombo Heritage Square”.

    Nalaka Godahewa, State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness, Indika Anuruddha, State Minister of Rural Housing and Construction & Building Material Industries, Sirinimal Perera, Secretary to the Minister of Urban Development and Housing were present at this occasion.
