    Expect heavy rains from today

    Another round of heavy rain was expected this week due to atmospheric disturbances, the Meteorology Department said.

    According to the Met Department, a gradual increase in rain over the country could be expected after today (26). There will be several spells of showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Central provinces and strong winds can be expected over the country particularly over hilly areas and surrounding sea area at times.

     

    Heavy rains would be experienced in Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces while the wind speed in sea area would be at 30-40 kmph. Showers will occur at several places in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle and at a few places in the sea area around the country during the afternoon and night. Winds will be South-westerly and speed will be 20-40 kmph. Winds can strengthen up to 50-60kmph at times and the sea area around the country will be rough at times.

     

    Although India had experienced a heat wave in recent days, Sri Lanka’s temperature would not exceed 40 C. The highest temperature would be at 37 C in the Eastern Province.

     

    The country would experience rainy weather till August this year and, therefore, there would not be sudden increase in temperature.

     

    According to the Met Department during the 24 hours ended at 8. 30 am yesterday the maximum temperature of 36.4 0C was recorded from Potuvil andminimum temperature of 13.5 0Cwas recorded from Nuwara Eliya and the highest rainfall of 15.4 mm was recorded from Colombo.
