He has given these instructions during a special meeting on introducing new reforms in the education sector, held at the Presidential Secretariat, on Thursday(21).
Expressing his views regarding the concept of Popular Schools he said that all the major schools in the country should be developed in a similar level of popular schools and through these initiatives can find solutions to the issue of Popular Schools.
The President said that he has never issued letters requesting to admit children to popular schools and his aim is to develop all the schools across the country and to provide equal education opportunities for all the children in the country.
The President paying special attention to the difficulties faced by the grade 5 students due to the competitive nature of the parents for the Year 5 Scholarship Examination, he has given instructions to prepare a new program taking into the consideration of ideas and proposals of every stakeholder.
He also gave instructions to the Ministry of Education to investigate how far the unpleasant incidents faced by the students during their school life will push the students towards committing suicide as the suicide rate increase in Sri Lanka.
“ The aim of the new government is to provide better education opportunities for the children in this country with the new technology while strengthening the free education policies of the country”, the President said that adding the officials in the education sector can play a key role in implementing policies and strategies in this regard.
Discussions were held regarding the steps taken by the government to develop the Piriven education and the President instructed the Education Ministry to appoint a director for the post of Director of Pirivena Education.
State Minister of Education- V. Radhakrishnan, State Minister of University Education- Mohan Lal Grero, Secretary to the Education Ministry- W.M.Bandusena, National Institute of Education (NIE) Director General- Prof Gunapala Nanayakkara and others participated in this meeting.
